De Lawton IADL-schaal (IADL staat voor instrumentele activiteiten in het dagelijks leven) beoordeelt de bekwaamheid om instrumentele dagelijkse activiteiten uit te voeren, en geeft de arts inzicht in de functionele zorgbehoefte van een thuiswonende oudere. Met instrumentele activeiten bedoelen we activiteiten zoals koken, alledaags huishoudelijk werk, boodschappen doen, het openbaar vervoer gebruiken of autorijden.

Deze schaal beoordeelt 8 activiteiten: de mogelijkheid om de telefoon te gebruiken, te winkelen, zelf voedsel te bereiden, huishoudelijke taken uit te voeren, te wassen en te strijken, eigen of openbaar vervoer te gebruiken, zelf de eigen medicatie te beheren en de eigen financiën op te volgen. Een score van 8 is volledig onafhankelijk voor IADL; een score van 0 is volledig afhankelijk voor IADL.
