The algorithm was developed using a unique international dataset of gold standard measurements of RMR.

The new algorithm was compared with published prediction equations for similar populations and with previously published RMR prediction equations.

This algorithm requires entry of height, weight, sex and age. This information is used to calculate lean body weight (by the extended Janmahasatian algorithm) and subsequently RMR.

Lean body weight only can be calculated from height, weight and sex using the original Janmahasatian algorithm also to be found on this website.

Conditional information

This RMR value is a prediction calculated using a peer-reviewed published validated algorithm (see details). However, it is an estimate NOT a reference value. A diagnostic reference value can only be obtained using a reference measurement method such as indirect calorimetry. This estimated value should not be used for making clinical decisions.

The RMR distribution plots are for guidance only. They are based on the distribution of reference RMR values found in the population studied in Porter et al. (2025)
