Voor de vroegtijdige herkenning van delirium op de intensive care (IC) kan gebruik worden gemaakt van observatie en het diagnostische instrument: Confusion Assessment Method-ICU (CAM-ICU). 

NB: Op verpleegafdelingen dient gebruik te worden gemaakt van de DOSS score. 

Instructies voor gebruik: 
Op IC afdelingen hebben alle patiënten, ongeacht hun leeftijd, een verhoogd risico op delirium. Vanwege dit hoge risico wordt bij alle patiënten op een IC, twee keer per dag, tenminste drie dagen, en verder zolang als nodig, een observatie en diagnostisch meetinstrument gebruikt voor delirium. Beantwoord de volgende vragen van de CAM-ICU direct na afloop van het gesprek met de patiënt op basis van de tijdens het gesprek gemaakte observaties.
